Artist's Biography

Fine art, landscape, seascape, architectural, eclectic, urban and nature photographer Jacqui Barley was born in London, England. Her family emigrated to Canada where she grew up as a native of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. She was raised surrounded by the ocean, mountains and lush west coast forests outdoors and exposed to her parents' love of the arts and books indoors. An early inspiration was the book "The Art of Leonardo da Vinci", a gift from her brother.

Her ability to create visual imagery was nurtured by her mother's creativity with textiles and her father, an architect and enthusiastic photographer. This led to a twenty-two year career in Montreal and Toronto in film and television. Starting from costuming, her artistic realm expanded to include props, set design and production. She discovered the joy of capturing a fleeting moment on film with her first "point and shoot" Olympus SLR camera in 1990.

"It's all about capturing a single frame - a momentary glimpse - in a way that allows others to see what I see."

After returning to the West Coast Jacqui assisted in developing the Nanaimo Art Gallery Downtown's Art Sales and Rental Program. She also provided art photography for Gallery 223 in Nanaimo, producing accurate images that helped establish the gallery's database of consigned art works. Jacqui (often spelled Jackie, Jacky or Jacquie) Barley has fine-tuned her eye for momentary glimpses of urban, rural, and seaside scenes. Her exceptional images of old and new architecture reflect her heredity. Modern graphics technology enables her to further refine her images, create unique interpretations and create digital photographic collages.

Jacqui's formal and practical Art education includes programs at Victoria College of Art, Malaspina University College and the University of British Columbia.
